Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adolf Mkenda has launched a National special scheme for the rolling out scholarships meant to support local students to undertake nuclear science technology studies abroad.
The launched scholarship is extension of Samia Scholarship, and is part of concerted efforts by the Sixth Phase Government to heighten performance of nuclear technology sector in Tanzania.
To coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in sync with the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), the helpful program will see a number of Advanced Secondary School students, basically those graduating with good academic track records in science studies receive lucrative scholarships to study nuclear technologies studies in reputable varsities in the world.
Speaking during launching of the helpful scheme, Prof. Mkenda observed that apart from motivating local students to undertake science and technology studies, the launched initiative focuses to plug existing gap in the number of nuclear technology experts in Tanzania.
“Nuclear technology stands among sensitive sector to propell for socioeconomic sector in Tanzania, thus this program is for allowing the country produce a record number enough of high-profile and skilled experts for handling the sector in order to bring about the much-needed advancement,” he said.
Prof. Mkenda challenged the science students in Tanzania to make sure they perform impressively in their daily studies in order to stand a possible opportunity to grab the vital scholarships.
And he further observed, nuclear technology is worldwide used to support development of diverse sectors, including health, mining, and construction as well as in electricity power generation, saying the Government was set to implement an array of viable initiatives to develop performance of the vital sector.
Last year, the Tanzania Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) embarked on a useful program to annually sponsor at least best five science students to pursue nuclear technology subjects abroad.
According to TAEC’s Director General (DG) Prof. Lazaro Busagala, the program which will gobble up to 2.6bn/- will span for three consecutive years, with an eye to promote innovation in the different science facets across the country.
” The program also target to attract and motivate more girls to undertake science studies, from secondary to higher education level,” he said, added the move was also in line with the ruling party’s (Chama Cha Mapinduzi)’s Manifesto.
Apart from those to be sponsored for further studies abroad, the other excelling students in science studies will be assisted to further improve their studies at different local varsities.
