National Seminar for 50 Journalists to Provide Awareness and Understanding on the Safe Use ff Radiation in the Country

The Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) today August 22, 2024 at the TAEC Headquarters Kikombo Dodoma, has held a one-day seminar for Journalists of the City of Dodoma to provide education on the responsibilities legally performed by TAEC within the United Republic of Tanzania

The aim of this seminar was to give journalists an understanding of the legal responsibilities carried out by the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), especially in the areas of development and control of the safe use of nuclear and radiation technology within the United Republic of Tanzania.

The seminar was officially opened by the Director of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Ladislaus Mnyone who was representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Prof. Carolyne Nombo, in his speech explained to the journalists  the duties and tasks performed by TAEC legally.

In addition, Prof. Mnyone explained that TAEC is the only institution authorized to promote, control and manage the safe use of radiation in this country, and one of its major responsibilities is to ensure that all services provided using radiation sources throughout the country are provided in a high level of safety and great attention to be able to reduce the possibility of people and the environment getting harm that can be caused by radiation.

Nuclear technology is used in various sectors in the country and around the world, including health, education, agriculture, livestock, water, industry, construction, mining, oil, gas and cargo inspection, and in Tanzania so far there are a total number of 1548 centers  in the cycle year of  2023/2024 that use this technology “said Prof. Mnyone”

Prof. Mnyone thanked the participants of the seminar for responding to the call and sacrificing their time to participate in the important seminar and said that their participation make them to be good ambassadors of the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission, in providing public education on the various works carried out by TAEC , to finally eliminate the negative attitude of citizens and other stakeholders who were associating TAEC with the production of Atomic bombs.

In his statement, the Director of the Radiation Control Unit, Dr. Justine Ngaile who was representing the Director General of TAEC Prof. Najat Kassim Mohammed said, TAEC is a cross-cutting institutional that works in collaboration with various Ministries and Institutions within the United Republic of Tanzania, so the coordination of the use of nuclear technology in various projects that use the nuclear technology at the institutional and ministry levels is coordinated by TAEC.

In this coordination, various achievements have been achieved in the improvement of cancer treatment in the Health sector, the research of water sources in the Water sector, the monitoring of the quality of Roads and buildings in the Construction sector, and other sectors such as Energy, Livestock, Agriculture , Transportation, Defense etc. therefore, TAEC is instrumental in managing the use of that technology as well as encouraging the safe use of nuclear technology for sustainable development “said Dr. Ngaile”

In conclusion, the Acting Director of the Radiation Control Unit, Mr. Machibya Matulanya gave sincere thanks to Mr. Prof. Ladislaus Mnyone, Director of Science, Technology and Innovation for the official opening of the seminar and TAEC Management for successfully preparing the important seminar while thanking the journalists for their respond  to participate in the important seminar.
